Foods which promote Longevity

Since we can’t stop the aging process, are there any foods we can consume in order to maintain our health and beauty longer? The answer is “yes.” There are numerous foods which promote healthy aging and longevity. So what are these magical foods and how exactly do they work?

One of these magical foods is olive oil. This particular product has been around forever and numerous studies have confirmed its health benefits. For instance, the people of the Greek islands of Crete have been consuming olive oil for centuries. Numerous studies have shown that those people have very low rates of heart disease. This particular product is rich in mono-saturated fats and polyphenols, both of which protect the body from heart disease and other heart related illnesses. Another age healthy food is fish. Fish also promotes heart health because it is rich in omega 3 fats. The omega 3 fats prevent cholesterol buildup, prevent abnormal heart rhythm, and numerous other heart related illnesses. A study has been completed on the Native Inuit’s of Alaska who ate mostly fish and as a result of their diet they were completely free of heart disease.

Blueberries are the third age healthy food. Blueberries are responsible for maintaining a healthy balance and concentration as we age. They also have the capability of lessening inflammation and oxidative damage. For those people who don’t know, oxidative damage is associated with age related deficits in memory and in motor function. So by consuming blueberries, we are improving our memory, our balance, our reaction time, and our coordination. All of these age healthy foods are easily attainable and delicious. So why wouldn’t we want to make our future healthier and brighter by consuming more of these age defying foods.

Simple Steps to a Healthier Weight

Many people, who want to lose weight, expect the process to be quick and difficult. Very often people will be very harsh on their bodies physically and nutritionally. Some people will exercise for countless hours of the day, while others will completely give up certain food groups. However, healthy weight loss does not have to be that difficult. There are certain simple steps which we can take in order to improve our weight.

The first step to a healthier weight is to reduce food intake slightly. This does not mean cutting out entire food groups from your diet. It simply means placing a little bit less food on your dinner plate; for instance, if you are about to consume a meal, instead of grabbing your usual big plate, opt for a smaller plate. Another way to achieve a healthy weight is to eliminate carbonated drinks from your diet. These types of drinks are loaded with sugar and they contain absolutely no nutritional value. Instead, try to drink more tea, milk and water. Water is overall very beneficial for your body. Milk is rich in calcium; whereas, tea is enriched with beneficial antioxidants. So try to make these beverages your top picks.

Another way to reach a healthy weight is to watch what you eat when dinning out. Many people splurge when they go out to eat. They either eat way more than usual or they eat something that is much more fattening than usual. This is truly unnecessary. Many restaurants now days offer exceptional low fat meals. So you don’t have to sacrifice your healthy eating habits just because you are out. And last but not least, whether you are eating at home or dining out remember that you don’t have to “eat-it-all.” Some people have the tendency to wipe their plate clean even if they are already full. So if you want to lose weight without undergoing any harsh dieting regimen, try to incorporate a few of these tips into your daily diet.

How does Stress impact your Skin?

Your body has a way of reflecting your health. For instance, if you have a cold, your body will show signs of extreme fatigue. The same idea goes for stress. If you are stressed your body will undoubtedly show it. Not only will you feel sad and unmotivated but you will also have the chance of showing signs on your skin. For instance, a lot of people, when under stress, experience an increase in breakouts. When this occurs, it only leads to more stress. So what can we do in order to reduce tension and its effects on our skin?

In order to reduce stress and its impact on our skin we have to maintain a healthy diet, get adequate amount of sleep, exercise and remember to relax. A healthy diet is quite simple. Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. Try to eliminate foods that are greasy or fried. Also be sure that you get plenty of sleep. Studies show that most adults only get five hours of sleep each night when the recommended amount is eight. So be sure to get plenty of sleep. Another important part of a stress free life is exercise. Be sure that your physical fitness routine is something that you enjoy so that you stick with it. The same goes for relaxation. Be sure that you set some time aside each day to do something that is both relaxing and enjoyable.

And last but not least, if you want to avoid blemishes on your skin, be sure to stick to your daily skin care routine. Many times, if we feel stressed we do not feel like keeping up with daily tasks. This could lead us to skip our morning face wash or our nighttime makeup removal. When we skip these important tasks, we are truly asking for unsightly breakouts. So if you don’t want stress to impact your skin, be sure to follow these important steps.

A few reasons why we experience Poor Digestion

A healthy diet is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. Everything that we eat gets digested and absorbed by countless organs in our body. Our digestive system is responsible for absorbing and breaking down all that we consume throughout the day. So maintaining a healthy digestive tract is crucial to our health. If our digestive tract is functioning poorly, all other organs in our body are not getting the proper nutrition. So what are some of the reasons why we experience poor digestion?

Eating too quickly is one of the first reasons why we experience poor digestion. When we eat fast, we don’t chew our food thoroughly. When our food is not chewed properly, our digestive tract has to work twice as hard to break the food down. Second reason behind poor digestion is fluid intake with meals. When we drink any type of liquid with our meals we are diluting the acids which break down the fat. When we dilute these acids, our digestive tract is unable to break down the foods properly. There have been some mixed beliefs regarding this particular circumstance; however, majority believes that beverages should be saved until the meal is consumed.

The third reason behind poor digestion is eating while under stress. When we are stressed we tend to indulge in fattening foods even though we are not hungry. Munching on calorie laden foods has been proven to be comforting yet unnecessary. So if you are feeling stressed, try to munch on something healthy and easy to digest, such as veggie sticks. And last but certainly not least remember not to eat late at night; as the day turns into night, our processes slow down, including our digestion. So if you eat a meal a ten o’clock at night, that meal will not be properly digested and your organs will have to work twice as hard to even attempt to break down the food. If you feel like you suffer from poor digestion, you should make sure that you don’t make any of these simple mistakes.

Reduce your Food Cravings Naturally

It may be hard to believe that food cravings are all in our head. When we crave something it does not necessarily mean that we are hungry. The part of the brain responsible for controlling memory and pleasure could simply be recalling one of the last times we enjoyed a delicious snack. If we give into these thoughts every single time, we will surely encounter a weight problem. So how can we avoid the temptation and the occurrence of these cravings all together?

One way to avoid food cravings is avoid stress. When we are stressed our brain triggers us to find comfort (usually in food). Some of the most comforting foods while under stress are laden with fat and sugar. Many people will reach for a candy bar, ice cream, or chips. So try to avoid stress at all costs. Another way to diminish unnecessary snacking is to avoid hunger. For instance, have you ever gone to the grocery store hungry? You end up buying almost every single junk food product, from candy to crackers. When we are hungry our brain controls our food wants. And what our brain desires is something delicious, quick, and fattening. This is when we end up grabbing a snickers bar while standing at the checkout line. It is moments like these that we want to avoid. Simply try to eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day thereby eliminating your chances of unnecessary hunger.

And last but not least, you should equip your house with smart carbs. This way, when a craving does occur, you don’t have anything unhealthy to munch on. Try purchasing more whole grain products, more fruit and more vegetables. All of these foods contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals which will sustain hunger quickly and naturally. So if you experience food cravings, remember that it’s all in your head and it can be controlled.

How to keep your Skin looking Beautiful

Our outer appearance is the first thing that everyone sees. It is a reflection of our health and vitality. Keeping our skin beautiful well into our thirties and forties takes a lot of tender, love and care. Here are a few healthy habits you should adopt in order to maintain a beautiful complexion.

First and most important thing is to wash and moisturize your skin daily. You should wash your face at least twice a day, once in the morning and one more time before bed. After you cleanse your face you need to follow up with a toner and a moisturizer. The toner will remove any leftover makeup and the moisturizer will replenish your skin’s moisture. And despite of what a lot of people believe, everyone needs to use a moisturizer, even people with oily skin. Simply find a product that best matches your skin type.

Another step to beautiful skin is sun block. Using at least SPF 15 protection on your face and body will reduce your chance of developing wrinkles, discoloration, age spots, benign growths ( such as moles), pre-cancerous growths and cancerous growths (such as melanoma). And the third way to maintain a radiant complexion is to consume a healthy diet. This means avoiding fried and greasy foods and consuming more fruit and vegetables. Following these three easy steps will help you maintain healthy looking skin. However, if you happen to notice a skin problem, be sure to speak with your dermatologist as soon as possible. Also, remember to self screen your skin, especially if you live in a hot and sunny area of the world. Regular self screening will help you recognize any changes or growths on your body. So if you want your skin to reveal a healthy image, follow these easy steps.

Improving your Digestive Health

A healthy digestive system is very important. When you consume a poor diet your digestive system weakens tremendously and it impacts the rest of your body. As a result, your immune system weakens and leaves your body more susceptible to numerous illnesses. A healthy digestive tract absorbs nutrients and releases them to the rest of the body. This way, all other body parts are well nurtured and unwanted toxins are disposed of regularly. When your system is weakened on the other hand, your body is unable to absorb the necessary nutrients and numerous toxins get left behind. Irritable bowel syndrome and even colon cancer can be a result of a weakened digestive system. So is there anything we can do in order to improve our intestinal health?

A healthy diet is the first step to healthy digestion. A healthy diet consists of no fried foods and no processed foods. What you should be consuming is more fruit, vegetables, and fiber enriched products. It is also vital to drink plenty of water because water helps your body get rid of unwanted toxins. Also, try to include some probiotic foods into your diet, such as yogurt.

Another way to build a healthy digestive tract is to exercise regularly. Not only will regular exercise keep you fit, you will also experience reduced levels of stress. Everyone already knows that stress has a negative effect on the digestive system. However, given that all of these natural remedies still don’t improve your health to its fullest; you can always try certain all natural supplements. There are supplements out there which aid with bloating, indigestion, chronic fatigue and other intestinal problems. So if you want to improve your digestive health, try a few of these healthy lifestyle tips.

This particular fitness routine incorporates slow and graceful movements therefore it is very easy on our bodies. Furthermore, tai chi has been said to slow down bone loss in premenopausal women.

Why is Eating more Fiber beneficial to your Health?

Many people are aware of the fact that fiber consumption is beneficial to their health. However, not too many people actually get the recommended daily dosage. Most people only consume 14 grams per day, and the recommended dosage ranges between 21 and 38 grams. So what are some of the benefits of Fiber and how can we incorporate more of it into our daily diets?

Fiber offers numerous health attributes to the human body. This particular compound has the power to prevent constipation, prevent cardiovascular fitness, prevent type 2 diabetes, prevent certain cancers and encourage colon health. So now that we know some of its beneficial factors, how can we get more of this product into our diets?

Some people may think that it’s difficult to get 21, let alone 38 grams of fiber into their daily diet. A single slice of white bread has only 0.6 grams. But actually, the transition from no fiber to lots of fiber is quite easy. There are numerous food alternatives which incorporate this particular compound. For instance, instead of consuming fruit juice, you can eat more whole fruit. Instead of white bread, you should purchase whole grain bread. You can also substitute your white bagel for oatmeal or fiber enriched cereal. You can replace white pasta for whole wheat pasta and whole rice for brown rice. Beans and lentils are also an excellent source of fiber. When it comes down to snacks you can opt for raw veggies and mixed nuts instead of chips and crackers. And try to replace you calorie laden chocolate dessert with some fresh fruit. So as you can see, making a just a few of these diet changes will quickly increase your daily fiber intake.

Trouble Sleeping? Here is the reason Why!

Many people experience trouble sleeping. There are numerous factors which can influence our sleeping habits. Sometimes it may be difficult for us to pinpoint the exact reason behind our restless nights. Here are a few reasons why a lot of the population can’t sleep during the night.

An overactive mind is one of the first reasons why most people are kept awake at night. When we lay down to sleep, many of us take this time to think about how our day went or how our day will turn out tomorrow. We often think about things which worry us and things which excite us. It is a moment of silence which we use to reflect back upon things in our life. However, this time should not be spent thinking or worrying. When we think our bodies produce stress hormones and when the stress hormones are active, it is impossible to fall asleep.

Another reason why you may be having trouble sleeping is due to a disturbed internal clock. Many of us, especially the younger generation, stay out late on the weekends. This routine messes with our body’s internal clock. So if at all possible we should try to go to bed at the same time each night and wake up around the same time each morning. Another reason behind poor sleep is a poor diet. It is nearly impossible to fall asleep on an empty stomach. And if you do manage to fall asleep, you will most likely wake up in the middle of the night. So try to consume a healthy diet and be sure that you don’t skip dinner. These are just a few reasons why some people have trouble sleeping. If you feel like you fall under one of these categories, try to improve your lifestyle habits.

What’s all of the Hype behind Yogurt?

How many of us have been to the grocery store lately and have seen the yogurt isle? I’m sure that anyone who has is surely amazed by the variety. The yogurt isle is long and colorful and it overpowers most of the other dairy products. Due to the large selection, it is often difficult to choose the healthiest choice. So what ingredients should we look for in this particular product and what are some of the potential health benefits we can gain?

Since yogurt is made of milk, one of the potential benefits we gain from it is animal protein. A six ounce serving provides the body with nine grams of protein. Some other nutritional values that the product contains include: calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B-2, and vitamin B-12. Probiotics is yet another word that we can find on a lot of yogurt packaging. What this is a friendly bacterium which is naturally present in our digestive system. This particular bacterium boosts our immune system and promotes a healthy digestive tract.

The active cultures also aid with several gastrointestinal conditions. Constipation, diarrhea, lactose intolerance, colon cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease can all benefit from the live cultures present in yogurt. This particular food can also increase out immunity, decrease vaginal infections, build strong bones, and promote weight loss. Furthermore, only 2 to 3 servings of dairy can reduce our chances of developing high blood pressure by 50 percent. So as you can see, yogurt does a lot more than promote a healthy intestinal system. So why not incorporate more of it into our diets? It is delicious, it comes in many flavors, and it is very beneficial to our health. So the next time you are at the grocery store, pick up some yogurt and your body will thank you.

How to make a Powerful Breakfast on the go?

Many people don’t have time to make a cup of coffee in the morning, let alone have a healthy breakfast. We run out of the house with hopes of enough time to grab a doughnut and a cup of coffee at a local pastry joint. We think that we are living a healthy lifestyle because we are consuming breakfast. But the truth is, the foods which we consume are laden with calories and sugar. After eating a doughnut, we may feel full and energized, but that energy will only last an hour or two. This is definitely not a healthy way of living. We need to consume a breakfast that is energizing and rich in valuable nutrients in order to lead a healthy lifestyle. So what are some of the food choices that we have?

One of the fastest and easiest options is cereal. The grocery stores currently have numerous cereals that are rich in vitamins, fiber and whole grains. Since fruit and vegetables are loaded with beneficial fiber, the smoothie will keep you energized and will keep your stomach full for hours upon hours. And if all else fails, make yourself a quick sandwich. Use egg whites, whole grain bread, bagel or muffin, and a slice of cheese or a piece of smoked salmon. So as you can see, there are numerous healthy breakfast alternatives available today; all you have to do is be willing to try them.

How can you help your Child develop Healthy Self-esteem?

Building self-esteem is a lifelong process which is established at childhood. The way a child feels about himself/herself is often reflected in how they act. Often times, parents are one of the biggest influences of early self-esteem development. The way that they act and behave around their children on a daily bases is reflected greatly in the way a child feels about himself/herself. So what can parents do in order to ensure that their children grow up with a positive attitude towards life?

One way that a parent can encourage healthy self-esteem in a child is to instill in them a sense of belonging. Make sure that the way you act and talk to your child is always positive. Remember not only to tell your child that you love him or her, but also to show it. Children who are loved by their families are more likely to feel more confident around others. Another way to help your child develop healthy self esteem is to offer them praise when praise is earned. Children learn how well they are doing by the parents’ reactions to their behavior. So if your son or daughter has done something worth praise, make sure that you don’t miss the opportunity to do so. There is a rule which states that a parent should offer praise at least twice as often as they criticize. So if you have to criticize your child on a given day, be sure that you also offer them praise twice that day.

And last but not least, children learn best how to work with others by first learning how to work within the family. So include your child in appropriate family discussions and functions. Also try to give your child a few age appropriate responsibilities. These are just some of the ways that you can ensure that your child will develop healthy self-esteem.

Stop Snoring Today

If you or your partner snores, you have probably tried just about anything to make it stop. There are sleep studies available, surgeries, nose plugs, you name it. My stepfather actually had surgery done and he still snores to this day. He might have stopped for a few days, but then started right up shortly after. So, I am convinced that if you snore, then you snore. There is no way out which may or may not be true, depending on the person.

Have you ever had to sleep next to a loud snorer or even in ear distance of one? It can be very annoying, to say the least. You will definitely need ear plugs, sleep aids, or a sleep machine to drown the noise out. It is a big problem for couples because it interrupts sleep or may even cause them to sleep in different rooms at night. If one person is a light sleeper, then sleeping in the same room with a snorer definitely won’t work.

Loud snoring, (close to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome) with breathing pauses is linked to cardiovascular disease and increased health care utilization. Snoring increases with age and is very common among senior citizens. There is a 40% greater risk for hypertension and 34% higher risk for a heart attack. 67% are more at risk for a stroke compared with people who don’t snore. Quiet snoring is associated with risk for hypertension in women. Snoring is a sound made in the upper airway of the throat when you sleep and breathe in air when the airway is partially blocked. Some suggestions from doctors might include losing weight, cutting down or eliminating alcohol and other sedatives at bedtime. Also, try to avoid sleeping on your back. Perhaps you can beat the odds if you are a snorer.

Basics of a Detox Diet

Detoxing is not only for alcohol and drug addicts, it is for anyone who wants to “clean” out their system. It decreases the amount of chemicals that are digested, perhaps by maintaining an organic diet. It also focuses on foods (high fiber and water) that provide vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that the body naturally needs to keep the body pure from harmful chemicals. This doesn’t seem that bad, right? Well, easier said than done.

Get rid of foods that are hard on the metabolism like alcohol and caffeine (obviously), processed food, salt, sugar, red meat, fried food, yellow cheese, etc. Concentrate on consuming large quantities of raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, fish, herbal teas, and legumes. Detox is short for detoxification, the body’s natural process of eliminating toxins from the body. Toxins found in food additives, household cleaning products, drugs, pollution, and cigarette smoke, are generally transformed through stools or urine.

Over time, a poor diet is thought to put too much strain on the body and leads to build up in the system. It has also been linked to hormonal imbalance, impaired immune function, nutritional deficiency, an ineffective metabolism, indigestion, fatigue, poor skin, bad breath and muscle pain. People have reported energy boosts, clearer skin, regular bowel movements, improved digestion, increased concentration, and mental clarity after doing a basic cleanse. Not just anyone can try a detox diet and it is best to consult with your doctor before beginning any program. For example, pregnant women should definitely avoid this at all costs.

As you begin your detox program, (there are many programs on the market or you can make your own home system) you will most likely experience some side effects. The first one being a headache typically contributed to caffeine withdrawal so it is suggested to slowly wean yourself off it to prevent this. You might also benefit from starting a program on the weekend or if you have a few days off from work as you might be running to the bathroom quite frequently. You may also have diarrhea, constipation, tiredness, weight loss, hunger, irritability, and acne.

Relieve PMS Naturally

If you are a part of the female population, you will most likely be able to relate to this article. For most of us, our period comes once a month with symptoms starting about a week or two before. They can include water retention, bloating, tender breasts, moodiness, insomnia, abdominal pains, and headaches. If you are one of the lucky ones, you will only see a few of these or perhaps none at all. Let’s explore some of the natural ways we can relieve some of those most pleasant situations during that time of the month.

PMS was thought to be caused by a biochemical hormonal imbalance, but we now know that it is caused by excess estrogen with a corresponding deficiency of progesterone. A poor diet has been said to add to these symptoms. By eliminating all junk food, as well as stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate and refined sugar), you may be able to notice some relief. A proper diet should include an abundance of healthy animal fats, complex carbohydrates and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Certain foods help relieve common symptoms and they just happen to be very healthy as an added bonus. A few include: brown rice, wheat germ, broccoli, bananas, tuna, whole wheat, cabbage, chamomile tea, almonds, salmon, egg yolks, lentils, evening primrose oil. To help depression and violent mood swings, lavender and peppermint are also very useful. Avoid both liquid and partially hydrated vegetable oils, as they interfere with hormone production.

Consume foods rich in vitamin A, D, E, and B complex, calcium, magnesium, and some fatty acids. It’s important to use a natural source of vitamin A, such as cod liver oil as artificial alternatives can be harmful. B6 is a natural diuretic which helps with bloating related to premenstrual syndrome and helps regulate estrogen levels. Vitamin E helps sore breasts, depression, irritability, and manages hormone levels. Pantothenic, calcium, and magnesium treats stress and promotes proper muscle function. Cramps and tension are relieved with these vitamins. Consult with a health care professional for an individualized supplement program to fit your needs.

Artificial Sweeteners - How dangerous are they?

What is the big controversy over artificial sweeteners? Is it really that bad for you? If it is, why are over 200 million people consuming it on a regular basis? It has endless adverse health affects that people may not be aware of or maybe they just don’t care. They may feel the effects but do not know what the cause is and wonder why modern medicine can’t help them. I recently tried a popular brand of powdered iced tea and I noticed a nasty after taste. I believe it had an artificial sweetener containing aspartame.

There are too many products on the market today to mention but some of the most common include: breath mints, gum, ice cream toppings, iced tea powder, many sugar free products, puddings, yogurt, table top sweeteners, and much more. Many people do not let their children drink anything with it in it, which is understandable. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests or x-rays. It changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, nor epinephrine, and adrenaline.

If you have ever gone to the doctor and complained about physical symptoms and he or she couldn’t find the cause, it is most likely due to your diet and/or environment. The aspartame detoxification program may help you if you experience any of the almost one hundred symptoms listed on the web ranging from blindness to shortness of breath. Try it for 30 days and you should see some results.

Start by removing all aspartame products from your house, write down any changes in your health, get your hair analyzed, be happy within yourself, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, drink tons of water, and eat plenty of raw foods. Tell everyone you know about it, contact your local and federal government representatives, write a complaint to the FDA or the FAA, return all your groceries containing aspartame to the supermarket, set an example to others, and distribute literature to create awareness. In this case, what we do know can help us.

We are going to explore the different types of ingredients commonly found in today’s best selling energy drinks. Next up is Taurine, a 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, an organic acid which has been shown to alleviate muscle fatigue in rats, increases exercise capacity. Ginseng is a plant, the roots are commonly consumed in North America and Asia as adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, stimulants, as well as for the treatment of type II diabetes and male sexual dysfunction. Guarana, from the seeds of the guarana plant contain 3 times the caffeine of a coffee bean. In Brazil, drinks containing this largely outsell soft drinks. Recent research has shown that it boosts memory and physical endurance in rats, with human studies showing that lower doses increase memory, alertness, and mood.

With Ginkgo, blood flow and memory improvement seem to be the most prevalent suggested affects, though the amounts included in drinks are so random that it doesn’t have any effect. Gingko L Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound which aids in fat consumption and disposal in the body. Synthesized in the liver and kidneys, it’s also found in many other foods – meats, beans, vegetables, fruits, and grains. Inositol is a nutrient that aids in regulating the central nervous system.
