Choosing the right Sugary Treats for your Kids

Children crave numerous sweets and treats, especially during the summer months. Chocolate cake, carrot cake, candy bars, ice cream, and a plethora of other teeth rotting candies are on top of any kids’ summer menu. However, most of the time, eating theses calorie laden foods during the summer is acceptable. Children tend to be a lot more active during the summer months; therefore, they burn a lot more calories. However, if you are still uncertain about your child’s sugar intake, remember that balance and moderation and key to success.

For instance, you can bake cupcakes or brownies in order to have better handle on portion control. You can even lessen the amount of calories that your brownies contain by replacing oil with half oil and half applesauce (or other fruit puree). As for chocolate, one of the summer favorites, you can replace some of the pure chocolate treats with simple shavings of chocolate. You can place these shaving over angel food cake, frozen yogurt, or fresh food, thereby creating a chocolaty treat with fewer calories. Many parents will agree that a fruit salad topped with chocolate shavings is a far better nutritional choice than a chocolate candy bar.

You can also create a plethora of other sweet treats. You can use low fat or fat free ice cream along with reduced fat whipped cream and fresh fruit in order to create your very own dessert. The kids will love it and they will have absolutely no idea that the ingredients are reduced in calories. One great example constitutes of a grilled banana, low fat vanilla ice-cream, a drizzle of melted chocolate, and light whipped cream. So the next time your kids ask you for a yummy treat, try creating one of these healthier sweet snacks.
