How Weather affects Mood

Going to a warm place in the middle of winter can be a huge mood booster. Pleasant weather has been proven to improve moods, memory, and broaden our cognitive thinking skills. However, extremely hot weather can actually make us feel more tired and sluggish, lowering our overall mood. Being outside on a nice spring afternoon after being in hibernation all winter long offers a way to recharge your mind.

In a recent study, participants who spent time outdoors in moderate weather were more content than those who spent all day inside. They also found better memory scores when they ran tests comparing the two groups. Research has also proven that sunlight boosts your serotonin levels by providing it with vitamin D. Of course people feel a little more blue in the winter and better in the spring. That is no big shock. Some even experience SAD in the winter, which is seasonal affective disorder from lack of sunlight and warmth.

The best temperature for humans is about 72 degrees because it is the most temperate. That explains why people in southern California are so happy all the time. Research has also found a link between hot weather and violent behavior. To improve mood, a person must spend at least 30 minutes outside in warm, sunny weather. Spending time indoors when the weather outside is so nice tends to decrease mood and diminish critical thinking patterns. It is most likely because we resent being cooped-up inside when spring time arrives – commonly referred to as spring fever. It can also make inside activities seem boring or annoying causing less productivity.

Maybe just the activities associated with being outside affect our mood. Warm weather is associated with the beach, baseball, dozens of fun sports, as well as camp fires, bike rides, etc. It brings back childhood memories of playing outside all day until dusk. Who doesn’t love that?

How to Prevent Emotional Breakdowns at Work

We all want to achieve the perfect balance between work and personal life. We always look at the person who seems to have it all on the outside with great envy. So, what is the secret behind being content with both areas of our life? Modern culture makes sure we are always busy at home as well as at work and that makes us feel overwhelmed. We are bound to have an emotional melt down at some point. However, there are times when it is inappropriate, especially when you are working with a difficult colleague. This article will address different ways to handle sticky situations at work and at home.

Start by waiting about 2 days before reacting to something. Sounds easy, right? Instead of over reacting due to high stress levels, you need to think through your actions. Intense anxiety and stress can make you feel emotionally volatile – being on top of the world one day and feeling miserable the next day. When you’re not feeling so great, you have a habit of losing patience and reacting to unpleasant situations with extreme annoyance. This is due to prolonged stress at work or in your personal life.

You are generally supposed to leave your personal problems at the door when you get to work, but that is not always the case. Things can happen to you or to a family member or good friend that may cause you to get upset. If that happens, simply get up from your desk and go for a walk. You could even call someone or confide in a coworker who you feel you can trust. In addition, excessive work overload may have an impact on your emotional state because long hours can bring on major exhaustion.

Other things can contribute to emotional instability at work such as a mismatching in job skills and job responsibilities, inability to fit into a team to accomplish a goal, attitude issues with certain coworkers, job insecurity, and a lack of support system in the office. Use weekends as a time to regroup and relax, not to pay bills, run errands, and go grocery shopping. Vent to friends or your spouse about things that bother you not a colleague, who might use it against you or judge you. It might take some work to find a happy medium, but it is possible.

Anxiety begins with Childhood

Are you in a constant state of anxiety? Has it become one of your personality traits? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to read on to find out what is actually causing you to feel that way. Anxiety is natural some of the time, but when it controls your life and affects your relationships with others, it’s time to take the bull by the horns and do something about it. And no, it doesn’t have to involve prescription drugs. Anxiety is our body’s natural way of dealing with unresolved emotions during our childhoods.

Our coping mechanisms as children are underdeveloped, so we do not know how to handle traumatic events or unhealthy emotional situations. The feelings we did have often get suppressed because we have little control over anything as kids. The childhood experience is trapped inside of us adults. Anything such as divorce, death of a parent, abandonment, criticism, and anxious or alcoholic parents could cause anxiety. Doctors tend to give out medications like candy, but they just mask the problem temporarily. You don’t want to take pills every day for the rest of your life, do you? These tense feelings are not only in your head contrary to popular belief. It begins in your brain, pituitary gland, adrenals, GI system, heart and ovaries.

There are other factors that contribute to the cause of chronic anxiety problems. A neurotransmitter imbalance can sensitize your brain into a fear response. Consistent higher levels of the excitatory neurotransmitters along with low levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitters can dramatically change your brain chemistry. When you are already anxious and add caffeine into the mix, it makes for the jitters, heart palpitations, shakiness, and sometimes disorientation. Also, if you take anxiety medications and drink something with caffeine in it, you are likely feel similar effects. Meditation, chatting with friends, therapy, and music can help you handle anxiety.

Understanding Chakras

The word chakra translates to wheel or circle and theories believe it links the human body and mind into one. It was first originated in India and it’s a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy. What does this mean to you? By getting a better understanding, you will recognize which chakras are stronger and which ones are weaker within your own body. You may be able to work on the weaker ones to experience more of what life has to offer you.

There are six of these energy wheels stacked vertically, branching from the central nervous system from the forehead to the pelvic area. Each circle has a different meaning corresponding to various aspects of consciousness. The chakra on the crown of the head is said to be the highest power controlling all the others. When this is active in a human being, he or she sees no limits and have reached most of their human potential. It connects the central nervous system with the hypothalamus. The thalamus is thought to have a major role in the physical basis of consciousness.

The third eye or the forehead chakra regulates the instincts of sleep and awakening and also contains the pineal gland which produces melatonin. It is known as the area of perception and relates to our intuition and spiritual awareness. The throat chakra, is linked to communication and expression. It is close to the thyroid gland which produces a hormone that causes growth and maturation. This area is often weak in many people, unless they are extremely charismatic. Then, they are able to analyze things in a more advanced way to better lie, keep secrets, and imagine things the way they want to view the world to get what they want.

When the heart chakra is activated, the person reaches an emotionally deeper understanding of oneself and others. They are able to feel pain when love is a part of their life as well as when it’s gone. It’s responsible for fighting off disease and stress as it’s connected to our immune system. The chakra located in the stomach area plays a role in digestion and converts food into energy for the entire body. It also makes people understand how their actions affect the world. The sacral chakra is located in the groin and relates to sexual hormones responsible for reproduction and mood swings. We also find creativity in this area. The root chakra, located on the bottom of the spinal cord, relates to the adrenal gland which is activated by basic human survival and security.

Now you should have a basic understanding of how chakras relate to each part of our mind and body. Which one do you need to work on?

Keep your Little Ones Safe this Season

Summer time means the kids are out of school and at camp, adults are on vacation, and the main objective is fun in the sun! Endless barbecues, bike rides, pool parties, out door activities like camping in the wilderness – you name it! It’s a fact that there are more emergency room visits in the summertime than any other season. You wouldn’t want an accident that could have been easily prevented from ruining your entire summer plans, do you? This article will explore some tips on keeping the kiddies safe and sound during every body’s favorite season.

When I was growing up, we never wore helmets, but supposedly they prevent about 85% of head injuries from occurring. Prevent a swimming pool tragedy by using a protective kid proof barrier around the pool, always keeping an eye on your little ones, use pool and door alarms, and teach your kids to swim at an early age. Allow only one person at a time on the trampoline, use a barrier, remove socks, don’t allow kids under 6 years old to use it, and don’t allow somersaults.

When grilling, never bring a charcoal grill indoors because it releases dangerous carbon monoxide fumes. If you have a gas grill, check the air tubes that lead into the burner for any blockage from insects, spiders, and food grease. Check hoses for cracking, brittleness, leaks, and holes. Make sure your home playground is safe by avoiding concrete or asphalt surfaces and use something like mulch, instead. Falls from swing sets cause 60% of playground injuries so having a soft, safe surface is important.

Use softer kid friendly baseballs and soccer balls. On that note, make sure soccer goal posts are secured on the ground so they don’t fall over and kill any young ones. Don’t let them hang or climb on the framework and remove nets when goals are not in use. When doing yard work, be sure to keep all tools in a secure place so kids will not think they can use them in their sandboxes. When mowing the lawn, always mow hills in an up and down direction – never across because you never know when little Johnny is going to fly by in his tricycle. These are just some of the things you can do to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all.

Be smart in the Sun

My friend mentioned that she was going to sun bathe the other day. Do people still do that? Maybe I am just getting older, but I stopped tanning years ago. Don’t get me wrong though, I still like to get my vitamin D on. My nickname in my late teens and early twenties was red lobster because I worshipped the sun and spent some time at the tanning salon. During those long, cold winter months I would love to get into a nice warm tanning bed. I have become more cautious of the sun’s harmful rays since then, though.

80% of the signs of aging are a direct result of sun exposure in our teens. Sun bathing can make us feel good and look good in the short term. Cumulative effects put us at high risk of cellular damage, early wrinkling, age spots, and skin cancer – melanoma. A sun tan is the body’s way of blocking UV rays to prevent further skin damage. That golden tone may look attractive but it is actually the result of injury to the top layer of skin – epidermis.

A sunburn is a 1st degree burn that usually shows up on the skin within a few hours of sun exposure (after a shower). It can last a few days and Advil or aloe can be used as pain relievers. 2nd degree burns damage the deeper layers of skin and nerve endings. This kind of burn is much more painful and takes more time to heal. It will result in swelling, redness, and blistering – don’t break the blisters because they are there to protect the skin and provide moisture.

Over time, UV rays damage fibers in the skin called elastin – causing the skin to sag and stretch. Sun may also cause uneven pigmentation and redness from permanent stretching of blood vessels. Freckles are OK – they are usually more prominent after you go in the sun but they are not cancerous. Pregnancy and too much sun with or without protection can result in melasma, which looks like discoloration. Age spots can be treated with bleaching creams, acid peels, and light based treatments. Practice healthy sun protection habits with hats, sunscreen, sun glasses and limiting your time outdoors between the hours of 10 am – 4 pm.

Increase your Chances of getting Pregnant

Many people are waiting until later on in life to start a family, however, the peak time to conceive in both males and females is during the mid-twenties. It is no shock that fertility decreases with age - it begins to decline in women over 30 and men over 40.
Endometriosis, tubal infections, and tubal infections are the cause of many miscarriages in older women. However, there are some things you can do to increase your chances of getting pregnant as you get older.

Cysts are formed when the follicle does not rupture during ovulation and starts to grow instead. Women who have this condition tend to get their periods very infrequently as opposed to once a month. Engaging in a healthy lifestyle will increase your chances of getting pregnant. Women who drink excessively are at risk for having babies with fetal alcohol syndrome. Even moderate drinking can cause mental retardation, facial deformities, and behavioral issues. Try to limit your temptations of drinking by asking your spouse or partner not to drink, don’t keep a full bar in your house, and drink grape juice instead of wine.

Smoking increases your chances of having a miscarriage in the first trimester. Smoking while pregnant also encourages under weight babies. In addition, pregnant women should also avoid second hand smoke and attempt to quit smoking before trying to conceive as it decreases the fertility rates. It would also be a good idea to wean yourself off of coffee since it’s been medically proven that caffeine affects a woman’s fertility. You should avoid all coffee, even decaf. Drugs, stress and smoking can affect male fertility. Men should also wear loose fitting clothing as a general rule of thumb.

The use of recreational drugs is bad for your health whether you are pregnant or not. Even over the counter drugs can harm your baby and cause a miscarriage. Healthy eating is imperative when you are trying to get pregnant as well as during the 9 month duration. It’s beneficial to increase your intake of folate before you get pregnant. It is needed before and during the first weeks of pregnancy and can help decrease the risk of serious and common birth defects. Leading a healthy lifestyle benefits you as well as your unborn child, so why not start now?

Cell Phone use Linked to Cancer

Turn on any news channel or check out any news website and you will see that everyone is talking about the possible health risks of cell phone usage, especially in children. What should you and your children do to minimize any possible risks? A cancer expert suggests limiting cell phone usage, especially in children, because of possible cancer risk. Children should only use cell phones in emergencies because their brains are still developing.

This is based on unpublished data, because science moves at a very slow pace. It is better to be safe than sorry, so take the proper precautions, now. There is no evidence that cell phones are absolutely safe. The FDA says that phones emit low levels of radiofrequency while in use and very low RF while in standby mode. It is difficult to study the negative affects it has on people, yet. If you are concerned, you can eliminate your exposure by using a headset, speaker phone, or holding the phone farther from your ear.

A study in Sweden suggests that that their no warnings of increased brain cancer rates. More studies are obviously needed on the long term effect of children’s cell phone use. The fact is there is no associated risk of brain tumors in children, yet. So, it might be better not to give out any false alarms because people will not believe anything we say and ignore future, bigger problems. Parents need to feel confident that they are doing the right thing for their children. Some argue that kids should not be given unrestricted access to cell phones all day and night. That is good parenting skills, not out fear of health risks.

This fear may be based on paranoia about living in a technological age and modern culture। Recent studies have shown no risk of brain tumors with regular cell phone risk। There is no link between wireless usage and adverse health affects in adults. However, nothing has been ruled out, yet either. There is a possible increased risk in those who use cell phones more than usual. There is a definite safety risk linked to texting and talking while driving. Long time cell phone users who talk more than an hour a day are more likely to suffer from a high –frequency hearing loss.

Health Benefits of Aromatherapy

The extraction of flowers and plants began over 6,000 years ago when the Egyptians used certain oils for medicinal and burial purposes. However, the official term was created in 1930 by a French Chemist. Lavender oil was used to treat soldiers in the World War 2. It can be used many different ways. Massage oils applied directly onto the skin during an actual body massage can kill germs and bacteria. It also increases the resistance to illness by boosting the immune system. Massage in itself can reduce tension by calming the nerves and depression and create rejuvenation.

In addition, they can also be enjoyed through our sense of smell. The inhalation of these scents causes a chemical reaction in the body which releases Enkephalin, Endorphins, and Serotonin which causes feelings of relaxation and relieving stress. It is also used in cosmetic products for the body, face, hair, promoting healthy skin. By taking a bath with certain oils, a person can experience emotional and psychological benefits depending on which oils are used.

Chamomile is known for its calming effects and it’s used to treat all kinds of aches and pains. Eucalyptus is used as an antiseptic and to treat sore throats, colds, and coughs. Jasmine is thought to aphrodisiac and has been reported to speed up the labor process and to alleviate post partum depression. Lavender is one of my favorites! I have candles, body wash, and lotion with this lovely scent. It’s used to treat insomnia, menstrual cramps, burn, insect bites and nervousness. In addition, it’s used as an ant-septic and antidepressant. Peppermint is used to treat bad breath, aid in digestion, improve concentration, memory, mood, and encourages communication.

Rosemary, a popular seasoning in cooking, is used to treat headaches, arthritis, and the common cold. Did you know the most common use of this is to increase memory? Sandalwood is used to treat dry skin and acne, also known as a sedative it’s used to reduce stress and anxiety. By incorporating essential oils into your lifestyle, your mind, body, and spirit will be refreshed and naturally revitalized. Either way you look at it, aromatherapy smells good and has many healthy physiological and physical benefits. So, why not try it if you haven’t already.

Mediterranean Diet is the Healthiest Diet

The Mediterranean Diet is known as the heart healthy diet because it is made up of the healthiest foods on the planet. Other components are similar to the cooking traditions in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, particularly Italy and Greece. My grandparents adhere to this diet and I believe they are some of the healthiest older people I know. This diet contains lots of fruits and vegetables and very little red meat. It dictates eating fish regularly, healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil, drinking red wine, and consuming small portions of nuts.

This diet is based around pasta, rice, fruits and vegetables all of which are good for your heart! The focus isn’t to reduce total fat consumption, but to make smarter choices about the type of fat you eat. All types of olive oil provide monosaturated fat that can reduce LDL cholesterol levels when used in place of saturated or trans fats. Extra virgin and virgin olive oils are the least processed forms. Walnuts are very good for you as they contain Omega 3-fatty acids. Nuts should not be eaten in large quantities; generally about a handful a day is good. Avoid honey roasted or heavily salted nuts whenever possible

Light intake of alcohol has been linked with a reduced risk of heart disease in recent studies. Red wine acts almost like an aspirin in that it reduces the bloods ability to clot and contains antioxidants, as well. Eat natural peanut butter, rather than one with hydrogenated fat added. Use butter sparingly and dip bread in seasoned olive oil as an alternative to butter. Substitute fish and poultry for red meat, avoid sausage and bacon. Have walnuts, almonds, or pecans as a snack to help you make it to meal time. Tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring are all great choices. Avoid fried fish unless it’s sautéed in a small amount of olive oil. Here’s a toast to eating well!

Best Organic Foods for your Family

We have all heard that organic food is the healthiest choice for kids because of their growing bodies. Making the complete switch to Organic may seem very costly, but there are a few items that are actually worth the higher price. Especially in today’s economy, providing healthy food for your family is a huge expense, to say the least. Before you think that I have lost my mind, listen up. Read on to find more about which organic foods to put on your next grocery list.

Most organic produce does not make much of a difference. Broccoli, asparagus, onions, peeled fruits – avocados, bananas, oranges, all have a low level of pesticides compared to others. People who buy organic milk do so because of the antibiotics, artificial hormones, and pesticides used in the commercial dairy industry. Potatoes make up about 30% of Americans overall vegetable diet. A recent study found that they contain one of the highest pesticide contents of all 43 fruits and vegetables tested.

Peanut butter is another child favorite used to garnish all sorts of fruits. The ugly truth is that 99% of all peanut farms use fungicide to treat mold, a very common problem. By buying organic peanut butter, you will steer clear of digesting any of that! You don’t have to go to an organic supermarket; most conventional stores now carry it. Ketchup is also a staple in many families. 75% of all tomato consumption is thru paste, juice, processed tomatoes, and ketchup. Research shows that organic ketchup has double the antioxidants of conventional ketchup. Apples are the 2nd most commonly consumed fruit after bananas and they are the most pesticide contaminated fruit.

My generation certainly was not given the choice to “go organic.” I had never even heard of the term organic until I started babysitting for some family friends. I noticed the kitchen cabinets and refrigerator were always filled with foods with very different packaging than I was accustomed to. It would be interesting to do a side by side comparison between kids who grow up on organic food and those who don’t.

Gym Etiquette 101

If you belong to a health club or gym you should be aware of both the formal rules as well as unspoken ones. The formal rules are usually written out by management of the establishment which includes things like time limits on cardio machines when others are waiting or no cell phones permitted in the locker room. The unwritten rules are also known as common courtesy or proper gym etiquette. Well, in some gyms around the country, common courtesy is not so common.

Have you ever heard your mother say “Close the front door! Were you raised in a barn?” It is based on the same principle of good manners. Bad behavior in gyms has even made national headlines. You will find a laundry list of reported incidents just by typing in “inappropriate behavior in gym” on any search engine on the web. You will also be likely to find true stories of public displays of affection in locker rooms. I have summed up some ways to prevent your self from being that rude, annoying person at the gym everyone loves to work out near.

What things aggravate you while you are trying to work up a sweat the gym? These are some of the most common pet peeves: People smelling like sweaty gym socks, dripping profusely with sweat and not wiping it up, people blatantly checking out others’ assets, singing at the top of their lungs to Milli Vanilli, grunting or moaning loudly, filling up their entire water bottle while there is a wait at the fountain, and music blaring from their Ipod. Excessive nudity in the sauna, steam room, and locker room are also the not so unusual annoyances.

Some common rules of the gym include: don’t hog the equipment, don’t jump in front of someone in the mirror, wear age appropriate clothing and leave something to the imagination. Guys – don’t wear those loose tank tops from the eighties – we don’t need to see your pecks unless you look like David Beckham, just kidding. Girls - leave the daisy dukes and pajama pants at home. It does not look cute in the gym.

Whatever gym I belong to, there is always that staple rail thin girl who is a permanent fixture on the elliptical machine. One in particular comes to mind – she was really pale, dripping with sweat, and always in a trance. I feel like she needed some sort of intervention from one of the staff members. She was obviously a gym addict. It’s up to you if you let things bother you. It might just be best to put on your tunnel vision and not pay too much attention to what everyone else is doing.

Is your Home Safe?

You may think of your home as a safe haven but how safe is it? You may be surprised to hear some of the dangers that might be in our own homes. Nonstick cookware contains perfluorochemicals (PFC’s) that have been shown to cause cancer, hormone disruption, and hypothyroidism in animals. In humans, there has been a link to a reduced ability to fight infections and low birth weights in babies whose moms exposed them to it during pregnancy.

PFC’s are found in the linings of fast food packaging and most microwave popcorn bags to keep grease from leaking through it. Pop popcorn on the stove or use an air popper. It is also best to take your takeout food out of the container and put it on plates. Don’t preheat an empty pan and keep the burner on medium. Replace scraped, peeling pans or switch to old fashioned cast iron cook ware.

There are pollutants in tap water you should be aware of but it is surprisingly more regulated than bottled water. Check your water with the Environmental Protection Agency and use a filter either on the faucet or an alternate approved system. On that note, there have been debates on how well these filtration systems actually work. We know they taste better but do they really get rid of all those nasty germs and chemicals found in the water. When I was living out West in a major metropolitan area, one of my friends told me there was a report about a one eyed fish found in the city’s drinking water. After that, I made it a point to never drink any other water besides bottled water.

If you have children, you may want to check for lead poisoning found in toys by subscribing to an email alert online. PBDE is a chemical found in household products which slows the rate in which something burns. It likes to stick to dust particles, so be sure to dust often. The problem is that it interferes with a child’s developing nervous system the causes problems with memory and attention. In addition, it contaminates the environment and bodies.

Can we really Burn Calories Playing Video Games?

What is the deal with this new fitness video game that everyone seems to be obsessed with these days? You know what I am referring to. I don’t even have to mention the name unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months. You might already be an addict or you may be a nonbeliever. What if I told you that you could burn some calories by playing a video game? Could these games really replace going to the gym? Are they aimed at the more sedentary population?

You need to own the original game and then you have to buy an additional CD with the balance board. After entering your birth date, age, and sex you will activate the balance board. Be prepared to hear that you’re overweight if you have large muscles. The BMI doesn’t take lean muscles mass and body fat into consideration. Don’t be shocked if your age is older than you are. It is largely determined by how well and how fast you do the first balance test and doesn’t take other factors into consideration like muscle strength or cardio endurance. Balance is a key component because it is one of the four categories of the fitness series which consists of skiing, a table tilt, and soccer. Many of the activities are focused on the core muscle group with encompasses slower, more controlled movements.

In addition, it offers yoga, strength training, and aerobics. True yoga buffs are not likely to be impressed with this version according to some critics. I am not surprised, because when I practice yoga, it is more for the experience and ritual. It’s a good idea to take advantage of technology that is associated with being a couch potato and combine it with something more active. The company that manufactures this game doesn’t claim it will result in significant weight loss or even make people healthier. I guess it is better than the older game versions where only your thumbs get put to good use.

Exercise at Work

No time to exercise? Are you using the same old excuse of “I have no time to exercise?” We are made to move, not sit at a desk for hours on end. Sitting produces back pains, headaches, and listlessness. You become less productive. The U.S. surgeon general recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day five times a week, yet most people don’t even come close to that. What if I told you that you could exercise at your desk at work?

Stretching, muscle strengthening and even short periods of aerobic exercises can be done in your cubicle. Even if you raise your heart rate for 60 seconds it is better than being flat lined the entire day. These exercises should not be a replacement for the gym, but they are better than doing nothing. Start by sitting on an exercise ball at your desk - be sure to use sit up straight and activate those abdominal muscles.

Walk during your lunch break or go to the gym during your lunch. Better yet, start a walking club with your coworkers or rally for an hour long fitness class in the office once a week. Set a reminder for yourself in your electronic calendar, email or on a note to get up and go for a brisk walk. Butt clenches and ab squeezes can be done while sitting in a chair and no one will ever know. Simply just hold a few seconds, then release and repeat 15 times. Women can do Kegels, tightening, then holding, then loosening the pelvic floor muscles. This will help prevent leakage and other problems down the line.

Find an empty office or conference room and do lunges or squats. Go up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. While seated, pump both arms over your head for 30 seconds, then tap your feet on the floor for another 30 seconds and repeat 3-5 times. Someone might come over and try to perform CPR on you, but don’t worry! Do a football-like running drill for 30 seconds. Don’t be embarrassed if others look at you like you’re crazy at first. They are probably just envious that they didn’t think of it themselves. Who knows, you might even start a new trend! You are sure to get the CEO’s attention now!

Instill Healthy Eating Habits in Children

Toddlers are inhaling French fries, pizza, candy, and soda in record numbers because they are mimicking adults eating habits. This is counterproductive because the best time to teach dietary habits is during those early, most impressionable years. Poor diets in adults are linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. We all know what a healthy diet consists of – lots of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Of course, the best way to show your children what a healthy diet entails is by adhering to one yourself.

There are many ways to instill healthy eating habits in our youngsters. Letting kids help in the preparation and clean up of meals will boost their self esteem and show them that healthy food can taste good, also. Take them to local farmers markets so they can feel a sense of community and see that food isn’t only sold in supermarkets. Replace plastic “play” food replicas of donuts and cookies with fruits and vegetables.

Awhile back, I sat for 3 children and the mother would correspond a specific dinner to each day of the week. Some of the meals consisted of pea soup, hamburger helper, and pesto angel hair pasta which they referred to as “green spaghetti.” Needless to say, supper time was a constant up hill battle. It was me against them with strict orders from the matriarch to force feed the children. I could never bring myself to do that, instead I would discard of the food somehow (that will remain a mystery). Their mother and her children could have benefited from the following tips.

Serve your children small child size portions, let them ask for seconds, and don’t rush them through eating. If they refuse to eat dinner, it’s OK, simple give them a nutritional snack later on. Serve a variety of foods to prevent them from getting bored easily. Make sure the meals are visually pleasing so they will want to chow down. Kid’s stomachs are small, so serve wholesome snacks in between meals. Also, don’t push too many healthy foods on them as they will deviate as soon as they leave the house. It is human nature to want something you can’t get. Meal time habits you create now will lead to a lifetime of healthier choices.

Weird Eating Habits Revealed

Do you have weird eating habits or do you know someone who does? What’s strange for one person might be perfectly normal for the next. For example, one of my friends is a health nut when it comes to food. That is fine, but she indulges in other things such as alcohol on a daily basis. Too much of anything is never a good thing. I have never seen her deviate from healthy food even when we were out late at night and everyone else is indulging haphazardly in fried foods or big breakfasts. She would always get egg whites on wheat toast with ketchup. It never failed. Maybe she’s just a creature of habit.

I have another friend who douses her meals with salt and pepper when she wants to force herself to stop eating. She’s also a very picky eater to boot. I have little tolerance for people who don’t like to try new foods as they aren’t very exciting dining out companions. I also tend to like ethnic food rather than American, but that is just my preference. I have tried all kinds – my favorites include Persian, Indian, Ethiopian, Japanese, and Mexican.

Eating in bed or on the floor is not as uncommon as you may think. When a good friend of mine didn’t have a kitchen table we just imagined that we were having a picnic in the park during meals. In some cultures, sitting on the floor is completely normal. My father puts ketchup on his eggs and macaroni and cheese which I always found repulsive. One of my friends in college used to eat about a ½ dozen eggs every day. She never gained the freshmen 15 so I guess she must have done something right.

Some people smell their food before taking a bite, lick foil wrappers off yogurt lids, or cut the ends off sausages or hot dogs. I must confess; as a kid growing up I indulged in grape jelly and cream cheese sandwiches. Later on, I realized it was weird because none of my friends had ever eaten one. Everyone has some sort of weird eating habit; some are more bizarre than others. There are plenty of online forums to discuss the topic anonymously to check if anyone else shares the same weird eating habits with you.

Swimming is for Everyone

You may be a runner, a yogi, a walker or a sports buff, but everyone can benefit from swimming. You may have a fear of the water stemming from a bad childhood incident that is preventing you from swimming. Or you may not know the proper techniques involved in swimming laps in an Olympic size pool. Have no fear, with a few simple tips you will be on your way to becoming a seasoned swimmer or at least look like one.

Swimming as a cardio exercise is widely recommended by most doctors because it doesn’t apply harsh pressure on the joints. It is a whole body workout for people who have injuries, musculoskeletal, arthritis, or weight limitations. Professional athletes train in water after injuries to regain their strength or cross train to improve their range of motion. People with disabilities or joint stiffness use swimming as a means to relieve pain. It incorporates all muscle groups – giving strength to back, shoulders, hips, glutes, and legs. Water gives 12 times the resistance as similar movements in air.

There have been many success stories associated with the positive impact swimming has on physical disabilities. People can go from getting around in wheel chairs to walking perfectly normal. Try to enlist a friend who is a good swimmer to show you the basics or get a swim coach. I am not a swimmer, never have been in my entire life until I had an injury Start by swimming for about 10-15 minutes at a time, then work up to 30 minutes a few times a week.

Don’t get frustrated- learning swim styles besides the doggy paddle can seem overwhelming. You can use a kickboard to feel more comfortable or begin by running in place in the water. It is a great workout and it can be very calming, as well. You just need a bathing suit that won’t fall off and some eye goggles. It took me awhile to get acclimated because I felt awkward and didn’t know what I was doing. Some kind soul showed me the way and I am hooked! Just dive right in! What have you got to lose?

Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening Methods

We all want a bright white smile. It is just a matter of how much you are willing to spend and what you are willing to do to get one. Some things are better left to the professionals to take care of and others can be treated at home. I have struggled with yellow teeth because I love red wine and grape juice. We are going to examine the pros and cons of the various whitening treatments available to you to obtain those pearly whites.

In-office tooth whitening is performed by a professional – either a dentist or a dental hygienist। It is the most effective method because the color change is the most dramatic in a relatively short amount of time. Your teeth are covered in a high concentration of peroxide gel and the gums are protected with a paint-on rubber dam. The peroxide remains on the teeth for 15-20 minute intervals equaling up to an hour. If you have extremely stubborn stains, you may have to go back for a second visit or follow up with home treatments immediately after. This service is of course the most expensive. I have seen it for as little as $399 to about $650. The risks are gum irritation and sensitivity to temperature, pressure and touch especially if you have a receding gum line or cracks.

You can also get a professionally made take home kit that contains a lower concentration of gel which stays on teeth for an hour or more (sometimes overnight). These custom made trays look like mouth guards and they cost any where between $100 and $400. Over the counter strips, trays, or pens/brushes are the least expensive and most time consuming option. I have tried one particular brand of these and I had trouble with the bottom strip – it wouldn’t stick to the bottom of my teeth. I actually called the company and told them I was having technical difficulties and they gave me some suggestions such as making sure my teeth were completely dry. They also sent me a complimentary package for my troubles. Honestly, I just don’t have the patience to apply them and sit there and wait for them to do the job. Another problem with the strips is that they only whiten the front teeth as opposed to the trays that whiten all of the teeth.

I have also tried one brand of a brightening pen that you are suppose to brush on your teeth and not drink anything for a half an hour, but that didn’t work. When I called the company, they told me that the purpose of the pens is to simply maintain your bright smile after getting a professional in office whitening treatment. Their company website did not imply that, nor did their online advertisements. To keep your white smile from turning yellow, try to drink darker colored beverages with a straw and practice proper oral hygiene.

Are you in Pain? Learn about the Art of Ergonomics

There is a new word to add to our vocabulary- ergonomics. I have never heard of this term until recently, while researching information about pain and swelling in the joints. My mother woke up the other day unable to move her wrists. She didn’t know what it could possibly be from. Originally, she thought it might be arthritis after checking her symptoms online, which seemed to be similar to that condition.

After keeping a record of her daily activities and eating habits, she was able to pin point the cause to her occupation. She was a part time sales associate at a women’s clothing boutique. If she was scheduled to work a few days in a row, she noticed pain and swelling in her joints on her day off. I asked her how she stood, what kind of hand motions she did, etc. It seemed obvious to me that the repetitive motions of folding and hanging clothes, replacing price tags, and standing caused the pain.

Ergonomics is the study of how your body interacts with your environment when you perform a specific task or activity. It involves arranging your work station equipment, lighting, tools in a way that is comfortable to you. When it is set up properly, you are less likely to have problems such as headaches, eye strain, neck and back pain. You can also prevent carpal tunnel syndrome which is caused by repetitive activities. Even the noise level and temperature in your surroundings can affect your work productivity.

Most injuries in the office are the result of the physical stress of prolonged awkward positions, repetitive motions, or over use. This puts strain on muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and spinal discs. Symptoms may be fatigue – pain in hand, wrist, arm, shoulder, neck, and back. Working intensely over long periods of time without taking breaks can increase your risk. Take regular breaks 3-5 minutes each about every 40 minutes and get up and stretch. Your computer screen should be eye level less than an arms length away. To protect eyes, use a glare guard or get a plasma computer screen.

Arms should be less than arms length distance away from the screen to prevent straining and squinting the eyes. The chair should have adjustable arm rests with a breathable padded seat. Your feet should be flat on the floor or you can use a foot rest to relieve pressure on the lower back. If possible, use a trackball mouse or a touchpad and wrists should always be in a neutral position. By incorporating these rules into you daily life, you should prevent an unnecessary injury from occurring.

Trouble with Flip Flops

Flip flops are a summer time staple for many people, especially the younger generations. I am willing to bet that it is mostly due to the fact that they have few, if any foot problems. Some experts say that they are ideal for the beach and running short errands, but not for schlepping all over god’s creation. They can also prevent you from catching athlete’s foot or plantar warts in public restrooms or in gym showers. However, it is bad to play sports or go hiking in the wilderness in them. I can certainly vouch for that.

Due to my free spirited personality, my friend and I decided it would be a good idea to go for a short hike down a mountain. We had flip flops on because it was so hot out and I don’t believe we had sneakers with us – although I could be wrong! Not too far into our journey we heard loud music playing and the sound of voices, but were unsure where they could be coming from. We found out from some fellow hikers that those noises were from a German Festival so we decided to follow the crowd there. Well, to make a long story short, we got lost and the festivities were not as close as we thought. We did get there eventually and we did have to hike back up the mountain in the flip flops. Needless to say, our feet were bleeding and hurting us like never before!

It is also not a good idea to go into a crowded place with sandals because someone is bound to step on your freshly done pedicure. You can also run into some trouble doing yard work - with red ants, bug and snake bites. In addition, it puts you at greater risk for stubbed toes, glass cuts, puncture wounds, or having something heavy fall and smash your foot. Unsupported feet are a lot more hazardous than supported feet leading to fractures, sprains, and torn ligaments that might require surgery.

Lastly, they can impair a driver’s control if they come off and get under the gas or brake pedal. In the sun, your feet need sunscreen, also. Try to alternate between different kinds of shoes as much as possible to avoid any of these problems.

Lower Body Exercise Secrets of the Stars

There are many celebrities who are famous for their body parts and even get them insured for pricey amounts of money. For example, when you think of Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian what comes to mind? Besides the fact that they are extremely talented and wealthy what do they have in common? Everyone wishes they had their behinds. The million dollar question is how do you get a nice, round attractive bottom without resorting to implants or butt pads?

There are certain exercises you can do to firm up your rear so you look better in those skinny jeans. Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your lower body. Add hand weights for more intensity and the wider your stance – the more you’ll work those pesky inner thighs. You can also try standing on the ball of your feet or one foot at a time for more targeted inner thigh squats. Lunges are also a tried and true toning move because it works so many muscles at once. You can do them side to side, reverse, front, and walking. For optimal results, elevate back leg but be careful if you have knee problems.

Walking up hills, stairs or a stepper machine are also very effective butt, thigh and overall leg exercises. Try adding lunges to that and you will really feel the burn! Running or biking on any incline also works the lower body. Sprinting is also said to be a good way to tone the thighs and butt muscles. Lying butt bridges, hip extensions with weights behind the knees while squeezing your glutes, leg presses using abductors and adductors, leg lifts, and one legged dead lifts or cable kick backs are all awesome ways to firm your lower body.

To avoid that pear shaped body, spinning works wonders for your entire lower half– alternate 3 minutes at 70-80 RPM with 2 minutes 100-110 RPM for 30 minutes. I always found spinning classes to be too intense (couldn’t last more than 30 minutes) but if you can get through an hour long class, you are sure to see results. Hiking up mountains, depending on where you live will also do the job. Genetics play a big role; if you have something to work with then these exercises will help.

Social Smokers - The New Breed of Smokers

Social smokers are a new breed of people who enjoy cigarettes. These are the kinds of smokers who bum cigarettes when they are out drinking or buy a pack that will last them an entire month. If you are a smoker, what kind are you? Are you the kind who has to take regular smoke breaks at work or do you only light up when you’re at a social gathering? The latter seems to be increasingly popular amongst young people in particular, according to recent surveys. Perhaps, the strict ban on smoking in public places has played a role in this, maybe it’s considered more taboo now than in yesteryears or possibly due to the well known health risks.

Overall, the total number of smokers is decreasing, but the percentage of occasional smokers is on the rise. If someone asks you, “Are you a smoker?” Your response might be a little vague by answering “sometimes”. There is a blurred line when you fill out the questionnaire at the doctors’ office if you’re considered a true smoker. Many people think that if you smoke any cigarettes even (if it’s only on the weekends) that would qualify you as a smoker. Myspace.com, you’ve probably heard of it, even has a category that states if you are a smoker or not. Which box are you suppose to check off?

Some say drinking and smoking go hand in hand – it’s the best feeling in the world. Social drinking can be compared to social smoking just like alcoholics can be compared to truly nicotine addicted smokers who seem to be a dying breed. When I think of a true smoker, an older women or man who has an extra deep voice and yellow stained nails comes to mind. Many occasional smokers started in high school or college and never graduated to become a full blown smoker. I had my first cigarette when I was 18 years old on a senior high school class cruise just to look cool. I never became addicted to cigarettes. Now, I am proud to say, I do not smoke at all, of course.

Most people know when they see a social smoker- they do not get easily agitated when they have to go without a cigarette for a long period of time. Social drinkers may be addicted to the actual act of smoking, the ritual, the oral fixation, the inhaling and exhaling action, or the social aspect. It is almost a bonding experience between people who don’t know each other very well. It forces people to talk to each other as they are standing outside restaurants or office buildings smoking in groups or pairs. Some consider it a small indulgence on vacations, comparing it to having a fattening dessert. Whatever the reason, social smoking is the politically term to use.

Surprisingly Healthy Fast Food Choices

Let’s face it – there are times when we need to go to a fast food restaurant. Desperate times call for desperate measures is my motto. Sometimes, you have no choice but to eat fast food in the fast paced culture we live in today. If you’re traveling, in a rush or if there are no other alternatives and you’re about to pass out may be some of those times. Many of us would prefer to boast that we never eat fast food but if we took a lie detector test it would be proved otherwise.

If you are absolutely forced to stop at a drive thru, there are healthy choices available to you. You just have to know what they are. Obviously, anything fried or super sized is not going to do anything for your waistline. I have researched what is healthy and what to avoid at a few major fast food places. The well known fast food establishment with the red headed girl in the pig tails is probably one of the healthiest fast food places. Try to choose food less than 300 calories per serving such as grilled chicken fillet sans the mayo, a side salad or a small chili and try to avoid the loaded baked potato.

At the leading nationwide taco establishment, choose the hard or soft tacos or any gorditas and avoid the loaded nachos and the stuffed burritos. At a popular sandwich joint order turkey, roast beef, or ham on wheat bread loaded with veggies and avoid the meatball and Italian subs. At the leading hamburger chain restaurants order side salads, small burgers, or grilled chicken sandwiches. Avoid larger portions of fries, onion rings, and sodas.

Once in a while, it’s Ok to stop for fast food but don’t make it a daily habit. About 5 years ago, I knew someone who ate at a well known fast food burger place every day for lunch. I was amazed because I don’t think my sensitive stomach could handle it. Maybe he just ate it everyday to save money because he boasted about ordering the most inexpensive items on the menu. He never ordered the healthier items and I witnessed him gain roughly 30 pounds within a relatively short amount of time. Either way, it is comforting to know that there are healthy items available at fast food places.

How to Avoid Surgical Errors

Face lift leads to woman’s death, woman’s ulcer misdiagnosed as cancer, surgeon operated on wrong organ, boy gets wrong leg amputated…the list never ends. Recent headlines like the above have become very troubling for people undergoing surgery. However, statistics are hard to come by, because most states don’t require doctors to report surgical errors. There are things you can do to lower your chances of something like that from happening to you.

You may have to be a pain in the rear to your doctor or nurse, but you have to look out for yourself. Ask your doctor how many times they have performed the procedure you are looking into getting done and compare it with other physicians. Check out hospitals online - some sites rank hospitals by specialty. Tell everyone your name, date of birth and what surgery you are having done so they don’t mistake you for Suzy down the hall.

The American Academy of Orthopedic surgeons encourages its doctors to sign initials directly on the surgical site. Make sure no one besides your assigned surgeon is signing it. Confirm the site with the surgeon right before surgery and don’t go under the knife until it’s clearly verified. Have a friend help you by keeping them afloat on what’s going on since you will probably be nervous before the procedure and out of it afterwards. They can ask questions and try to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Plastic surgery is another story. By performing a procedure, the surgeon is stating that they have the education, training, and necessary skills to practice safely. They also have the responsibility to disclose all possible risks post surgery. Any careful surgeon will not perform surgery on a patient who has unreasonable expectations or shows signs of serious mental instability. Patients also need to know what they should do in preparation of and prior to the surgery – sometimes it means stop smoking or taking certain meds. To avoid risks, it is important to use a board certified plastic surgeon and be sure you feel comfortable and confident with the surgeon you choose.

How to Avoid Food Poisoning

If you’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing the joys of food poisoning than you haven’t lived. That’s just a joke, actually! Getting food poisoning is no laughing matter, though. I can tell you from personal experience that it is no fun! I had it a few years ago from under cooked ground turkey meat and I was sick to my stomach and dizzy for a good day. I had to leave work, walk home and almost fainted on the sidewalk. I couldn’t even see straight! Read on to learn more about how you can prevent it from happening to you or a loved one.

Always wash your hands and everything else that comes in contact with food. This includes utensils, cutting boards, countertops, table ware, and cook ware. Wash hands with warm water for at least 20 seconds before handling food, after handling uncooked meat/produce and wash between preparing each type of food. Separate raw foods from other kinds of food and use a separate cutting board for meat and vegetables. Do not use the same utensils or dish ware with uncooked or other foods. Keep it out of the danger zone (40 F and 140F) by cooking it thoroughly. Check the internal temperature of meat with a clean thermometer and make sure it’s at least 140 F. It is not good enough to just eye ball it to see if it’s brown.

Keep food cold and chill leftovers quickly in refrigerator at 40 F or below or a freezer at 0 or below. Refrigerate or freeze food within 2 hours or 1 hour if the outside temperature is 90 degrees or above. Thaw frozen food in refrigerator, rather than the counter. If you need it quicker, thaw it under running cold water or in the microwave and cook immediately. If you do get food poisoning after taking the necessary precautions, the nausea and vomiting should go away within a day or two. Seek medical attention if you still feel ill after 2 days.

How to Procrastinate Well

When you think of the term procrastination, negative thoughts usually come to mind. But did you know that there are good ways to procrastinate that can actually make you more successful than you already are? Experts say that it just depends on what you’re putting off until the next day. You are essentially a bad procrastinator if you avoid big, important tasks; you are a good one if you delay the smaller menial tasks. Let’s take a closer look on how we can perfect our procrastinating skills to become better human specimens.

Some say the most impressive people are the ones who procrastinate on less important things. It’s like the absent-minded professor syndrome when one forgets to take a shower, shave, or brush teeth, but you discover a new cure for cancer. There are 3 types of procrastinators: those who do nothing, those who engage in something less important, and those who do something more important. The last category includes the best people because they put off the small stuff to work on the big stuff. By small stuff I am referring to errands and basic house chores.

Some things will disappear if you ignore them such as friends when you don’t return their phone calls or respond to their emails. Other responsibilities will only mount up to bigger problems if you let them slide for too long. These may include tasks such as paying your bills or filing your taxes. The point being, you are only delaying the inevitable: it will catch up to you eventually. If you have to tackle a huge project, it is more beneficial to stall on some of those missions rather than crossing off meaningless items on a to-do list. Real work needs big blocks of time dedicated to it. For the most part, you have to be in the right frame of mind to focus properly.

Errands only kill big projects by constantly interrupting you. However, if you are disciplined enough, another good idea would be to designate a specified amount of time to the project each day. The problem with bigger projects is that most likely you don’t enjoy them and they can almost cause physical pain so you don’t want to tackle them right away. There is also a fear of wasting time and failing after you put so much time and effort into something. But the fact is that you will always learn something even if the intended goal has not been met. So, go ahead and procrastinate the good way!

Feng Shui your Baby’s Room!

Congratulations on expecting a new bundle of joy into your life! There are so many things to do and just not enough time! You are eventually going to be planning your baby’s nursery and this can be crucial on how well your baby sleeps which affects you, as well. You can begin by following the basic Feng Shui methods of arranging and decorating rooms in any living space.

This is a Chinese system of interior design that promotes better chi – positive energy flow. It can help you ensure your baby is happy by planning a nursery that will encourage growth, inspiration and wonder. Poor Feng Shui will contribute to a baby who can’t sleep and tends to get sick. When planning a nursery, think of it as a special retreat for relaxation and bonding with your little one. Trust your senses and go with your instincts. If it feels good to you, you want to be there and it will create harmony and peace for your child. When choosing color schemes, stay away from too many bright colors. Opt for more soothing colors such as those in the pastel color family that you are more drawn to.

Have different sources of light in the room at various times of the day. The lights should be neither too dark which promotes respiratory problems, nor too light so they won’t rest deeply. Keep toys and electrical appliances to a minimum as it promotes too much stimulation. The placement of the crib is one of the most important things to consider. It should not be directly in line with the door, under a slanted ceiling, close to a door, or under a window. Open windows every day when possible or use a small fan to circulate the air, and use a mobile to create movement and soft energy.

To invigorate your baby’s sense of smell, use essential oils with the calming scents of lavender, vanilla, rose, or chamomile. If possible, choose natural material such as wood for the furnishings as opposed to plastic. The room itself should not be next to a noisy room, above a garage, or an empty space. Be careful when choosing nature designs, as some of the animals can be too aggressive. The baby’s nursery should be a haven as well as a source of stimulation for your little one. By using these methods, your baby should be less fussy and more comfortable.

Women Alcoholics on the Rise

When you think of an alcoholic, you generally see a man lying face down on the sidewalk on your way to work in the morning, right? Well, maybe not exactly…but that is what I think of. However, women are beginning to catch up with men in regards to alcoholism rates. Our paychecks are still smaller but we drink almost just as much as men, if not more.

Women respond to alcohol differently than men, it takes more time for it to leave their system. Women also develop alcohol related problems more quickly than their male counterparts. Having other psychiatric problems besides alcohol seems to be more the rule as opposed to the exception. There is also a shorter period from when they first start drinking to when they develop problems. They have a shorter way to go before getting problems such as liver disease and social problems.

So what is the meaning of alcoholism? According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, it is defined as “a primary chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking.” That just about sums it up. Some people can function normally on a day to day basis – they are called functioning alcoholics. It’s almost as if they become immune to it, their system becomes so used to it and it becomes like drinking water to them.

Women may condition themselves to think that they cannot socialize without “loosening up” first with a drink. A recent survey suggests that alcohol-dependent women have a 17 times higher suicide rate than other women. It magnifies the risk of suicide, perhaps because other mental disorders existed in the first place. A traumatic event or an anxiety disorder is worth exploring when a woman has a drinking problem. Obviously, the issue is more complicated than just having one too many drinks.

HPV- What you Need to Know

You have probably heard about recent HPV vaccines for teenage girls. You may have even been diagnosed with this virus or most likely have known or will someone who has. Most sexually active people will contract this at some point during the course of their lives। Most will never even know it because the virus usually doesn’t cause any symptoms. Often, the human body can clear the infection on it’s own in about 2 years.

The HPV types that cause genital warts are low risk for cervical cancer. Some are categorized as high risk Over the past few decades, experts found a link between human papilloma virus and cervical or genital cancer. There are more than 100 different kinds, 30 of which can cause genital warts, the other 70 or so can cause infections on the warts and hands. Cervical cancer is rare in the U.S. because the majority of women get regular annual exams which include pap smears. The smear comes back abnormal and it is the first sign of HPV. The doctor may then perform a colposcopy in which a lighted magnifier is used to take a closer look at any abnormal cells that be removed before they turn into cancer.

The chances of getting HPV increases when you have had many sexual partners, if you’re between the ages of 20-24, or women who are sexually active with men who have other partners at the same time। The virus can be transmitted to people through genital contact so a condom will not protect against it. To prevent it, avoid contact with another human being. To reduce your chances of getting it, try to stay in a monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner. In 2006, a vaccine was approved for use in girls and women aged 9-26 and may eventually be approved for boys as well. Another one was approved by the FDA in 2007 so hopefully widespread vaccination in the not so distant future will help prevent the spread of this virus.

Anger Management for Men

There are many things in life that men get easily annoyed or impatient with such as traffic jams, ignorant drivers, complaining, inappropriate text messages; the list goes on and on. It’s normal for anyone to get angry with these things, but the feelings seem stronger for some men than others. For the extremely hot headed, the littlest thing could make them fly off the handle. Some even enjoy having a bad temper; it makes them feel more masculine. Uncontrolled anger can even end a marriage or career or may be deadly. How do you know that your anger is out of control?

There has been evidence that confirms anger can diminish your health. Anger is more than just an emotion; it is actually psychological as well as physiological. When you lose your temper at a moments notice your nervous system leads to increased breathing and cortisol levels, higher blood pressure, dilated pupils, and headaches. Basically your body is getting into the flight or fight response mode due to the increased stress.

A recent study found that people who had increased levels of anger with normal blood pressure were more likely to develop a coronary artery disease and 3x’s more likely to get a heart attack than the least angry people. Anger’s stress hormones could contribute to arteriosclerosis, the build up of plaques in the arteries that can cause heart attacks and strokes. It has also been linked to depression. Angry people are less likely to take care of themselves, eat unhealthy, smoke, and drink excessively. Being angry is fine as long as you do something positive with it. The greatest music and works of art have been a result of anger and frustration.

You can control anger the same ways you would relieve stress by practicing deep breathing techniques, exercising, going for a walk, leaving the environment which caused the anger, close your eyes and count to 10 and picture yourself in a calm place. It is a common myth that acting in a rage by throwing things, for example can help rid the anger. Blowing your stack is not a good option but neither is suppressing your anger. If you are annoyed with someone you need to try to resolve it in a rational way by being assertive, not aggressive or passive aggressive in any way. If you know a certain situation or person pushes your buttons, try to prepare for it or better yet avoid it. Serious problems need to be treated with an anger management program.

Men Diet, too!

Diets are only for women? It may seem that way since all the major weight loss programs in the media seem to be geared towards them। On the contrary, more and more men have also been “watching their figures”. They do not like to use the word diet because it implies something feminine. The fact that having a spare tire around your waste or a beer belly is not very appealing would not be the only reasons why they are more health conscious now than ever. Being overweight is now becoming a precursor for diabetes and heart disease.

Females are not the only ones who obsess about their looks, men tend to work out a lot, turn to steroids and diet at the same time। They want to feel stronger and more masculine as opposed to slim. They worry that by dieting alone they will lose muscle mass as well as unwanted fat. Many men travel for business and find it difficult to incorporate healthy well balanced meals into their hectic schedules on the road. It is often more expensive and more inconvenient to eat healthier on the run when the dollar menu is a no brainer. They often have to adhere to company expense accounts containing strict budgets a certain amount each day and they do not want to go over that because it will come out of their wallets. Try bringing a few packages of oatmeal on the plane and they will provide the hot water.

You could also try to book your hotel rooms a few floors up from ground level and take the stairs up, after your luggage is taken up, of course! Men have a habit of foregoing breakfast at home which will only make them stuff themselves during lunch, resulting in more weight gain. Take the time to have something substantial like peanut butter on wheat toast by mid morning to ward off those hunger pains. Men tend to see weight loss results with portion control, also.

Man बूब्स Exposed

Everyone knows what man boobs are but its taboo to mention them and you never know if you will offend someone who has them. No guy wants to wear a bra. It is an embarrassing problem just like discovering a receding hairline. Man boobs will make you feel less appealing to the opposite sex and down on your self worth, in general. The best way to get a girl to notice you is by being attractive, right? Well, it can’t hurt to be easy on the eyes but personality, humor and smile have something to do with it, also.

Also called moobs, man boobs come from being overweight. They consist of fatty tissue stored over the pectoral muscles. The best bet is to lower your overall body fat because unfortunately you cannot choose where you are going lose the weight. As with any other weight loss program, you must stick to a cardio and strength-training fitness routine followed by a healthy diet. You either have to decrease the number of calories you take in or burn more calories through exercise. Ideally, it is most beneficial to do both to achieve the fastest results.

Another reason why men might have moobs is due to a medical condition called gynecomastia – a condition in which the body produces an increased amount of estrogen and a decreased amount of testosterone। This can also happen as the result of taking medications that affect hormonal levels in the body. A medical professional may dispense an anti-estrogen treatment plan or surgery may be the last option.

There are also many different exercises you can do to firm up your pectoral muscles. As stated previously, cardio is a must. You can do interval training to boost your metabolism, running to promote fat loss, rowing to work all upper body muscles, the elliptical machine for an overall body workout, and playing sports. You can also add strength training by doing seated chest presses, cable crossovers, bench presses and push ups. Try these tips for a few months and you are sure to see great improvements!

Healthy Snacks – the Key to Losing Weight!

If you are serious about losing weight, snacking is the way to go! Only a certain kind of snacking and it doesn’t include donuts, cakes, or cookies. Healthy snack foods are just as important healthy meals. By snacking throughout the day, you will be less likely to be ravenous and overeat during lunch or dinner. They can keep you fueled up and energized throughout the day. That means you will be more productive, physically stronger and more mentally alert.

Try to ignore those evil vending machines at work and bring your own snacks. All it takes is a little preparation either the night before or as you’re getting ready for work. It just depends on if you can get up early enough or if you’re a night owl. Avoid temptations if possible. I know that it may be difficult especially in a work setting when everyone else around you is chowing down on fried dough and pastries. It may be a good idea to plan your snacks during certain times and just concentrate on snacking. That seems next to impossible, since most of us are always doing something during snacking. Also, do not skip meals as this increases the urge to reach for those high calorie foods.

If you think your choices are limited when it comes to healthy snacks then you are dead wrong. You may also give into the misconception that healthy snack foods are not going to fight your hunger pains but that is not true. There are many quick healthy snacks out there, some you may have forgotten about or some new ones to add to your list. The following are some of my personal favorites: air popped popcorn with low salt and butter, apple sauce, sunflower seeds, edamame, low-fat string cheese, yogurt, pudding, raw veggies, apple slices, and whole wheat pretzels. There are so many more to choose from – just find your favorites and plan ahead!

Migraine Relief You Can Live With

Migraine headaches can cause excruciating pain and can become disabling. The symptoms can become so severe that it makes you want to crawl up into a ball in a dark place. Sometimes the headaches come with flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in the limbs. Some people experience nausea, vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light and sound. In the last decade, many break throughs have been made with regard to available pain medications.

Medicine combined with self help treatments and changes in lifestyle help enormously. You may have been dealing with these headaches on your own, but it may be time to seek professional help if your symptoms worsen or if it prevents you from performing daily tasks. Women are more likely than men to get migraines. Researchers say that these headaches are caused by functional changes in the trigeminal nerve system which acts as the primary pain pathway in the network of nerve cells.

During a headache, serotonin levels drop releasing neuropeptides which cause blood vessels to be dilated and inflamed which results in headache pain. Hormonal changes, foods, skipping meals, fasting, alcohol – especially beer and wine, caffeine, aspartame, stress at work all work followed by periods of relaxation on the weekends, bright lights, physical activity, changes in weather, and altitude can all cause migraines.

Avoid certain foods and aromas that have triggered headaches in the past. If necessary, keep a tab on the foods you eat the day you get the headache. Do exercise regularly, because aerobics, especially walking, biking, and swimming have been proven to relieve tension throughout the entire body. You must warm up slowly because abrupt exercise can trigger headaches. If you are a female, reduce your medications containing estrogen such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy. Speak with your doctor about possible treatment alternatives.

The Truth about Social Phobias

We have all experienced some kind of social awkwardness during one point or another in our lives. Sometimes we have the fear of talking in front of a large audience or we may feel like we don’t fit in at a social gathering. This is normal on occasion, but when these feeling become more and more frequent preventing a normal life, there is a problem to be addressed. You should see a health care professional, but it may a disorder called social phobia or anxiety.

You might call someone “shy” who has this disorder exhibiting strong feelings of persistent fear when engaging in social situations or interactions. They will even go to the extreme as to completely isolate themselves to avoid these feelings. Up to 13% of the population has been diagnosed with this disorder. It affects an equal part of the population usually first appearing during teenage to young adult years. Besides parties, some situations that might be avoided or feared are: eating and drinking in public, making eye contact with others, being the center of attention, meeting strangers, amongst others.

The majority of social phobia cases can be cured by therapy and/or medication. A person will begin seeing a psychologist who will develop an individualized treatment plan. The patient will learn that their issue is not a permanent personality trait, but rather a learned behavior based on false and unconscious patterns. They will also practice social skills in real life situations until the anxiety decreases to a reasonable level. Prescription drugs may also be involved if cognitive behavioral therapy alone will not work, but they come with many side effects. Self help groups seem to be beneficial so the patient can feel as if they are not alone in this battle.

There has been a debate on the causes of social anxiety from hereditary to environmental. The most apparent one seems to be the experiences childhood and the parental upbringing involved. If the parents are shy, constantly worrying or are overprotective, then the kids will feed off those feelings and the phobia will manifest itself. The key is to seek help if you or a friend needs it – it is never too late to shine.

Secrets to Shiny Hair

Do you ever wonder how all the celebrities seem to have perfect shiny tresses? They aren’t all just fake hair extensions, either. It is part of their job to look good and photo retouching can only do so much. They are bound to get harassed by the shutter bugs if their hair is less than perfect on any given day. Read on to find out how you can get gorgeous silky, touchable hair.

We will start with the basics - moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Shampoo should contain silicones, fatty alcohols, wheat proteins, and/or cationic polymers. These ingredients will help strengthen and protect the hair from environmental damage. Use a heat activated version if you regularly use a flat iron, hair dryer, or curling iron. You should always use a conditioner after washing to replenish the moisture that was stripped from the harsh hot water. If you have oily hair, use a volumizing or fine hair conditioner on the ends of hair only, carefully avoiding the scalp.

Environmental elements can play a huge role on the condition of your hair. Cold air can cause hair to become dry, brittle, and damaged due to low humidity, rough winds and indoor heat. UV rays, year round (not only during summer months) reek havoc on the hair cuticle and cortex by breaking down proteins that weaken and dry hair out over time. Leave in conditioners, weekly deep treatments such as hair masks and hot oil create a protective barrier.

Using too many styling products dulls the hair so stick to one or two necessary items. Gels and creams are ideal for normal hair whereas pomades are better for thick or coarse hair. Straightening and blow drying are fine as long as you religiously use a protective product. Give the hair a cool blast after blow drying to smooth the cuticle. If you’re hair is color treated, use products for color treated hair to prevent the color from fading and looking dull. Get regular trims, even if you have to do it yourself, just have someone check it to make sure it’s even. Right before you jump out of the shower, rinse your hair with cool water to increase shine.

You can also try some home remedies if you’re strapped for cash or for a quick fix. Here are some oldies but goodies- apply mayonnaise to your hair, concentrate on the ends and cover it with a shower cap. Don’t rub it into your scalp or apply too close to the hairline to prevent oily hair and acne breakouts. You can also try mixing a few eggs into a bowl with some olive oil, shampoo hair, then let it sit for 5-6 minutes before rinsing it with cool water. The key to shiny hair is to moisturize and know what type of hair you have.

Loving Yourself: The Secret to Success

You cannot love anyone else until you love yourself first. If you are feeling down or frustrated with yourself for any reason, try to determine what it will take to change those thoughts. It could be just as simple as a new makeover or a weekend away with your friends. If you have been feeling bad about yourself for a long time, it might be something deeper that is preventing you from accepting or giving love. Here are some ways to stop pushing people away and getting the love you deserve.

Your confidence level and self esteem will play a huge role with your intimate relationships. A poor self image or low self esteem will lead to constant self doubt. Write down three things each day that you like about yourself. Ask friends to send you things they like about you via email, phone, snail mail or whatever. Write them all down in one place and make a note every time someone compliments you. Put them all in a nicely decorated container and pull out the pieces of paper whenever you feel like throwing a pity party for yourself.

Use affirmations such as “I am beautiful inside and out and deserve to be loved.”
Put those positive thoughts in places where you’ll be sure to see them everyday such as the bathroom mirror, your favorite book, or next to the remote control. If you don’t feel comfortable leaving them out for others to view, put them in your underwear or sock drawer, planner or journal as a book mark. Write down negative thoughts in your head and think about who said them to you. Try to write back counter messages to each one and you should feel better in no time. Don’t be so critical and hard on yourself. Have compassion for yourself and where you’re at in life. You should be own your best friend.

Weekend Getaway Money Saving Tips

When’s the last time you went on a vacation, got out of town, or had a getaway? Whatever you like to call it, I like to refer to it as a mental break. Depending on your personality and interests, any time away from work, school, or the daily grind should be a time to recharge your batteries. We all know what it feels like to burn the candles at both ends and a vacation is the perfect cure. Traveling these days isn’t the most affordable or practical thing to do for most of us, but there are ways to get around those inflated prices.

Begin by exploring your local area. It’s true that tourists usually see and do more in a foreign city than the people who actually live there. If you live in a resort area or destination spot your job will be easier – just walk out the front door. You can also get a list of fun things to do or ideas for weekend trips in your state by visiting your local Chamber of Commerce. They will be more than happy to assist you and they have tons of resources with biased information. You can check out your state parks, festivals, parades, etc. and plan a trip around it.

If your travels require lodging accommodations, there are a few money saving tips to mention. Find other families living in your destination of choice to swap houses with by going online. To save on hotel rooms, stay away from those 800 numbers who will most likely direct you to a national call center. Instead, call the local hotel number and ask to speak with the manager on duty who may be willing to negotiate with you. If possible, avoid hotel booking sites, you can get a better discount if you book your reservation through the hotel’s website or by calling them directly. You need a getaway now more than ever to prevent or relieve tension and stress in your life.

Top Ten Healthiest States: See How Yours Measures Up!

How healthy is your state? Recent studies have compared 22 different factors to determine what makes up the healthiest places to live in the United States. The most obvious ways to measure would be air quality, stress level, and access to healthy nutritional foods. But there are other factors that you would find quite surprising such as AIDS rate, % of smokers, and safety belt usage. Read on to find out about the top ten healthiest and unhealthiest places to call home.

If you live in Minnesota, congratulations! You can boast that your home town is in the healthiest state in the country! This is largely to due great health care coverage and the number of adults who exercise regularly. The runner up is…New Hampshire because of its scores for the lowest sexually transmitted disease rates as well the lowest level of teenage pregnancies. Coming in 3rd place is another New England state, Vermont with the lowest number of new AIDS cases reported. Other top healthy states include in the appropriate order: Maine, Massachusetts, Iowa, Nebraska, Hawaii, North Dakota, and Rhode Island. These results are not very shocking to me because I have had the pleasure of visiting most of them and they seem quite delightful.

If we cover the healthiest states, we must reveal their counterparts-those unfortunate unhealthy states. Mississippi tops the list for numerous reasons such as largest obesity population and highest infant mortality rate. Not too far behind is Louisiana with the 2nd highest age-adjusted death rate and the worst access to primary care among others. The 3rd place title goes to…New Mexico mainly for its rapidly declining health care system. Rounding out the top ten are in consecutive order: Nevada, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Alabama, and last but not least Delaware.

My home state is not on any of these lists which can be viewed as a positive or a negative depending on whether you look at the glass half empty or half full. Which specific city you dwell in can also have an impact on your quality of life. When deciding on the best relocation spot, many factors should be taken into account. Sometimes, we have no choice on where we hang our hats due to our occupation or financial situation. The more we know about living a healthy life, the better.

Baby Boomer Health Care Crisis

The United States spends more on healthcare than any other nation in the world. We are the only wealthy, industrialized nation that doesn’t have a universal health care system. There have been ongoing debates regarding the poor access, efficiency, and quality yet the increasing costs. It was impossible to watch one democratic nominee presidential speech without the analysis of this crisis. What does this mean for the baby boomers that make up 27% of the total population?

It’s imperative that the current state of the health care industry be more affordable, stable, and safe for the millions of aging boomers. Over 60% of them who are employed have been diagnosed with at least one chronic health condition such as cancer, diabetes, and arthritis to name a few. 7 million of that group does not have health insurance or have been without it for a period of time since age 50. People with very good insurance receive the very best health care money can by, where as the people with poor insurance receive very little or no treatment at all.

The fact that America spends more money on health care costs than food is astounding. As more medical advances are being made, the more money that is being put towards it. Out of pocket costs for premiums and co payments have taken a huge chunk out of older workers household income. Self employed workers in this age bracket are being hit the hardest. Over half these entrepreneurs spent more than $3,600 on health care costs compared to only 16% of people covered by their employers.

Some baby boomers are concerned that there are not enough skilled people in the health care profession to properly treat all of them. Basically, the supply and demand model is not in their favor. Some suggestions might include doing away with the two-year wait list for disabled individuals to be covered by Medicare, let people get into Medicare early, helped by tax credits for people with low incomes, and add Medicare health accounts for expenses not covered by insurance. The road ahead is not well paved but I believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

A Cure for the Chronically Late

Are you chronically late for everything? Some people are fashionably late for every commitment– it doesn’t matter what it is, enjoyable or not. That is not very healthy for both you and the people being affected by your lateness. One time too many and you’ll eventually lose the trust of others because they will think they can’t rely on you. It will also cause you stress and anxiety because you are rushing to beat the clock. If a boss, friend, or significant other has ever confronted you on this topic then it is time to change your habits.

It is not too late to try to redeem yourself before you lose someone or something very important to you. The negative effects can also be psychological because you are always apologizing and lose your self esteem along the way. You are probably aware of the fact that you are always a latecomer but do you know why? There are certain personality traits that are associated with latecomers. See if you can identify with one or more of them.

People who like to take risks by leaving for their appointments at the lastest possible moment- leaving no room for incidents that may happen. People who felt suppressed as children by authority figures may also use lateness as a way of rebelling. Late shows also don’t like to wait for others because they have a fear of having nothing to do. Allow yourself to be 10-15 minutes early for appointments. Bring a notebook or a good page turner in case you have to keep yourself occupied.

Those who are unorganized have trouble with time management, therefore are unable to calculate how much time they will need to get ready. Estimate how much time you think it will take you to do each task and double it. You might misplace your keys and waste more time by searching for them so keep them in one spot. If you tend to forget certain things, put a sticky note in a place where you’ll see it just before you walk out the door.

It is important to identify the causes of this perpetual cycle of self destruction. The possible cures may seem trivial, but it takes true commitment and a willingness to change for the better. By putting in a little effort, being on time will impress other people and make them feel important. Ultimately, this will only be beneficial to you and make you feel more at peace with yourself.

Live a Clutter Free Life Now!

A good way to reveal a great deal about a person’s personality is by checking out their bedroom. You can determine if that person leads an organized or messy life by the order in which they keep their personal belongings. Have you ever walked into someone’s room and wondered where the floor was underneath all the clothes? They might try to use the excuse that it’s an organized mess and they can find everything. How is it possible to think clearly if your living space is full of disorder?

Clutter actually prevents positive energy from flowing properly throughout your home. It also inhibits your cognitive ability and eventually spreads into other areas of your life, negatively affecting your emotional state of mind. If you have a friend who is an organizational guru, ask them for help. They will shed some light on the subject and get you started with your mission. However, they will not be there to hold your hand every step of the way. You will need to learn some survival skills if you can’t afford to hire a personal assistant.

Begin by going through your piles of papers and rapidly alphabetically file only the most important ones. Keep some extra files on hand if you need to put papers somewhere at a moments notice and have no where else to keep them. Moving forward, put all papers, receipts, and notes in one place then weed through them regularly. To eliminate those paper billing statements, sign up for the paperless versions to view online. Not only will you save a few trees, but you’ll also significantly reduce disorder.

When de cluttering your spaces, start with one area at a time. Begin with the biggest, most dreaded project first and work your way down from there. Clear your counters of unnecessary items that aren’t used frequently and store them away in the cabinet. Next, go through your closet and pull out the clothes you haven’t worn in awhile. Make a pile to go to goodwill, another pile to give to a friend, and so on. Keep your seasonal clothes stored away in a protective box, if possible. Enlist the assistance of others and it will be much more enjoyable!

Families are much smaller today than they were 30 years ago, but the houses are much larger. We, as Americans have a habit of filling up our attics, closets, and living spaces with too many material objects. In general, as a culture we have been taught that having things makes us more prosperous. We need to get away from that “keeping up with the joneses” thought process to begin to embark on a more stress free, fruitful existence.
