Perfectionism has been sweeping the world by storm recently. We live in such a competitive, cut throat environment so we’re afraid to be seen as failures. Whether or not you are a perfectionist is not of any importance but it seems to be the ultimate goal. Perfectionists are made at an early age, not born. Parents are to blame by putting too much pressure on their children to be excellent students as well as athletes.
In addition, they are seeking status and validation from them. So if they fail, it means that they are not good enough parents. That is not a healthy mindset to have. Kids are so stressed out these days with extracurricular activities and school that they have no time to just be young and care free. They are under the gun to get A’s in school, have lots of friends, and be the star of the football or chess team.
Perfectionism rigidifies behavior which constricts people when this ever changing world requires more flexibility. It keeps people from taking challenges and experiencing new things because it focuses too much on one’s self. It doesn’t allow people to find out what they really enjoy or create their own identities. Lastly, it lowers the ability to take risks and reduces creativity, playfulness and innovation.
Perfectionists have a constant stream of negative thoughts entering their brain because anything they do out of the box might cause a negative evaluation. If you are always focused on your own performance, you will never be able to learn anything new. It leads to constant frustration, anxiety and depression. They are afraid to make mistakes because they interpret them as equivalent to failure and believe they will lose the respect of others. If you are a perfectionist it will be difficult to break free but it is possible.
